Why bathroom mould keeps coming back
You scrub it, it looks great for a fortnight, then the black lines are back in the grout. That's not bad luck — it's a moisture problem that hasn't been dealt with.
Reason 1: the exhaust fan isn't doing its job
A lot of bathroom fans just push air into the roof cavity, or they're too small for the room. If the mirror is still fogged 20 minutes after a shower, the fan isn't clearing the moisture.
Reason 2: you're only cleaning the surface
Grout and silicone are porous. Household cleaners lift the colour out of the stain so it looks clean, but the mould underneath is still alive and regrows from the same spot.
Reason 3: there's water getting in somewhere
A failed shower seal, cracked grout or a slow leak behind the wall keeps the area permanently damp. No amount of cleaning beats a constant water supply.
Simple habits that help
- Run the fan during the shower and for 20 minutes after
- Leave the bathroom door open once you're out
- Squeegee the screen and walls down after showering
- Hang towels where they can actually dry
