Signs of hidden mould in your walls and ceiling

By the time you can clearly see mould on a wall, there's usually a lot more of it behind that wall. These are the early signs worth acting on.

Your nose finds it first

That damp, earthy, musty smell — like an old caravan or a wardrobe that's been shut too long — is mould releasing gases as it grows. If you can smell it but can't see it, it's behind something.

What to look for

  • Tiny black or grey dots on ceilings, cornices and window reveals
  • Paint bubbling, peeling or looking chalky in one spot
  • A patch of wall that's slightly darker or feels cool and damp
  • Warped skirting boards or a soft spot in the floor
  • Condensation running down windows most mornings
  • Rusty screw heads or dark staining on ceiling plaster

The usual hiding spots

Behind wardrobes on external walls, under kitchen and bathroom sinks, inside the laundry cabinet, in the ceiling above a bathroom fan, and behind the shower wall are where we find it most often in Sydney homes.
