Simple things to stop mould coming back
Mould needs moisture. Take the moisture away and it can't grow — it's genuinely that simple. Here's what actually works in an average Sydney home.
Watch the humidity
Keep indoor humidity under about 60%. A cheap hygrometer tells you where you stand, and a dehumidifier in the worst room does the heavy lifting through winter.
Dry your laundry properly
Drying clothes on an airer inside puts litres of water into the air. Dry outside where you can, or use a vented dryer with the laundry door shut and the fan running.
Move the air
- Open windows for 10 minutes each morning, even in winter
- Run exhaust fans in the kitchen, bathroom and laundry
- Leave a gap between furniture and external walls
- Don't overfill wardrobes on cold south-facing walls
- Wipe condensation off windows before it runs into the frames
Fix the small leaks early
A dripping tap under the sink, a cracked roof tile or a blocked gutter is usually what starts a big mould job. Sorting them early is far cheaper than treating a whole room later.
