Mould Removal in Wollongong
Coastal humidity, an escarpment that traps moisture and a lot of mid-century brick — Wollongong throws up mould problems that need more than a spray bottle. We treat them properly, and we back the work for twelve months.
Wollongong sits in an unusual spot for moisture. The escarpment behind the city blocks westerly airflow, the ocean sits a few hundred metres away from most of the older suburbs, and the summer humidity has nowhere to go. Add a housing stock that's heavy on 1950s and 1960s double brick, fibro beach cottages in Bulli, Thirroul and Corrimal, and a wave of newer apartment towers along Crown Street and the harbour, and you get three quite different mould problems in the one postcode.
In the older brick homes it's usually rising damp and cold external walls — bedrooms on the southern side of the house grow mould behind wardrobes and along skirtings because the wall surface never warms up. In the fibro and weatherboard cottages closer to the beach it's subfloor ventilation and salt-laden air working on timber. In the newer units it's condensation: sealed windows, no exhaust ducting to outside, and a bathroom that stays wet all day.
We work across the Illawarra from Helensburgh down to Shellharbour, and we've been doing this for over twenty years. That matters here, because the wrong fix in Wollongong is very common — painting over a damp wall in a beachside home buys you about one winter.

Where mould shows up in Wollongong homes
There's a pattern to the calls we get from the Illawarra, and it usually tracks the type of building rather than the street.
- South-facing bedroom walls in double-brick homes in Figtree, Mangerton and Keiraville, where the wall never gets sun and condensation forms overnight
- Subfloor mould in raised timber cottages through Thirroul, Austinmer and Woonona, often after a wet season with poor cross-flow ventilation
- Bathroom and ensuite ceilings in Wollongong CBD apartments where the exhaust fan vents into the ceiling cavity instead of outside
- Wardrobes, built-ins and behind bedheads in rental properties, where the tenant is blamed for a building fault
- Storage rooms, plant rooms and basement car parks in strata buildings along the harbour and Corrimal Street
- Water-damaged plasterboard after a burst flexi hose or roof leak, where the drying was never completed properly
How we treat mould — the actual process
Every job runs the same way whether it's a one-bedroom unit in North Wollongong or a whole ground floor after a flood. The point is to remove the mould and remove the reason it grew.
We start with an inspection. A qualified technician walks the property with a moisture meter and a thermal camera, so we're not guessing where the water is. Thermal imaging picks up cold, wet areas behind plasterboard that look perfectly fine to the eye — that's how we find the leaking shower recess or the roof penetration that's actually driving the problem.
From there you get a written scope and a fixed price. If it's surface mould on non-porous materials, we contain the area, treat and remove the mould growth, HEPA-vacuum the surrounding surfaces and apply a treatment to the affected substrate. If materials are compromised — soaked plasterboard, mouldy insulation, delaminated carpet underlay — those come out under containment, because you cannot clean mould out of the inside of a wall cavity.
Where moisture is still active we set drying equipment and monitor it, rather than sealing a wet wall back up. Then we deal with the cause: ducting an exhaust fan to outside, opening up subfloor vents, recommending a rangehood that vents externally, or referring you to the right trade for a roof or plumbing repair.
You get a completion report with before and after photos and moisture readings. Most jobs are quoted the same day, and for a lot of standard residential work in Wollongong we can treat the same day too.
Residential, strata, commercial and real estate
Homeowners in the Illawarra usually call us for one of two reasons: someone in the house has started coughing, or they've noticed the smell in a bedroom and can't find the source. Both are worth a look.
Strata managers across Wollongong's apartment stock deal with a different problem — the same defect appearing in six lots at once. When we find condensation mould repeating vertically through a building, we say so in writing, because that's a common property issue rather than six separate lot owners with a lifestyle problem.
For commercial sites — cafés and restaurants through Crown Street Mall, childcare centres, medical suites, warehouses in Unanderra — we work around trading hours and keep containment tight so you're not shutting the doors.
Property managers and agents use us for pre-lease inspections and for the awkward mid-tenancy disputes where nobody can agree whether it's a building defect or ventilation habits. Our reports say what the moisture readings show, and that usually ends the argument quickly.
If you're claiming, we produce insurance-approved reports with the documentation major insurers expect: cause of damage, affected materials, moisture readings, photographs and a remediation scope with costs.

Mould questions we get asked in Wollongong
Do you service the whole Illawarra or just Wollongong city?
The whole Illawarra. We regularly work from Helensburgh and Stanwell Park in the north, through the Wollongong CBD and Figtree, down to Shellharbour and Kiama. Travel isn't charged separately within that area.
Why does mould keep coming back in my Wollongong bedroom?
In this climate it's almost always condensation on a cold external wall rather than a leak. Humid coastal air meets a masonry wall that stays cold overnight, moisture condenses on the surface and mould grows on the dust and paint. Treating the surface without addressing ventilation, heating or the wall's thermal performance means it will return within a season.
Is mould in a beachside home worse because of the salt air?
Salt air doesn't feed mould directly, but the higher humidity near the coast does, and salt accelerates the corrosion of subfloor fixings and metal roofing, which creates the leaks that lead to mould. Homes in Thirroul, Austinmer and Wollongong's beach suburbs need subfloor ventilation checked more often than inland properties.
Can you treat mould in an occupied apartment?
Yes. We set up containment with negative air pressure and HEPA filtration so spores aren't pushed into the rest of the unit. For larger removals in a small apartment we'll sometimes recommend you're out for the working day, and we'll tell you that upfront in the quote.
Will my insurer cover mould remediation in Wollongong?
It depends on the cause. Mould resulting from a sudden event — a burst pipe, a storm, a failed hot water system — is often covered. Mould from long-term condensation or a maintenance issue usually isn't. Our reports document the cause clearly, which is what determines the outcome of the claim.
How fast can you get to a Wollongong job?
Quotes are same day. For most standard residential treatments in the Illawarra we can be onsite within 24 to 48 hours, and often the same day where the job is straightforward.
Do you provide reports for NCAT or tenancy disputes?
Yes. We provide independent written reports with moisture readings and photographic evidence that are regularly used by tenants, landlords and agents in tenancy matters.
